The Convent

Still getting into this one.  I like the multiple narrators and I'm finding the drama surprisingly engrossing.  Normally I read books with lots of action or a distinctive style.  The Convent's first person and competent, but pretty unremarkable.  I will say that the letter from a Catholic grandmother seems to be laying things on a bit thick, but maybe that's because it's for a teenage audience.  Maybe it's just the challenge of writing a religious character.  People who are outside of a faith must really struggle to write from the perspective of being religious.  It really is a completely different world view.

I like that this book isn't just a beat up on the poor decisions of the Church in the past.  It's important to remember that these were people who were, for the most part, motivated by compassion.
